To make golf more challenging, courses have hazards or obstacles—including lakes, rivers, and bunkers—that players must maneuver. When the ball falls in a bunker or sand trap, it can be difficult to angle the club, line up the swing, and hit it back onto the grass. To master bunker shots, try the following tips during your next game.

3 Strategies to Get Golf Balls Out of Bunkers

1. Choose the Wedge Wisely

To slice the ball out of the sand and over the bunker barrier, grab a high-lofted wedge out of your golf bag. With this club, you’ll have more control over the ball and be able to make the difficult shot at a short distance. A lob wedge with a 60-degree angle, for example, will be able to scoop and toss the ball high to get it back on the green.

2. Set Up a Good Foundation

golfA good stance is important when setting up a bunker shot, so dig your feet into the sand. This will give you a better idea of the depth for the shot. Most of the weight should be placed on the front foot, and the stance should remain open, as it will make the ball fly higher when you swing.

3. Practice Your Swing Path

Shooting the ball out of dense sand can be awkward, so it’s best to get familiar with the feeling before a game. You should use an outside-in swing path for the best results. With a slight wrist hinge at the top of the club, you’ll be able to hit the ball, so it sails higher.
