Dogs and cats are curious by nature, sniffing and pawing at anything that interests them. They’re also nimble, climbing atop kitchen counters, crawling under furniture, and otherwise getting into unexpected places. Unfortunately, this puts them at risk for injury from electrical items in your home. Next time you hire an electrician for repairs or maintenance, ask them about best practices to keep your pets free from in-home electrical hazards. In the meantime, the following guide will help.

How to Protect Your Pets From Home Electrical Risks

1. Invest in Strong Cables

High-end, durable extension cords and power strips are well worth the cost. Cheaper varieties are prone to overheating or creating sparks, which can burn or shock your furry friend. Go a step further by asking your electrician to pet-proof your cords by encasing them in plastic piping, so your companion won’t be able to damage them by chewing. Spraying cables with lemon juice or a diluted hot sauce solution will also deter your pets. Just be careful when applying them to avoid electrocution. Disconnect the device before spraying, avoid putting the deterrent directly on the plug, and wait until it’s fully dry before reconnecting.

2. Never Leave Appliances Running electrician

There are several small home devices that you should never leave unattended, for your safety as well as your pet’s. A frisky dog may knock over a hot iron, for instance, causing injury or fire. A cat may stick its paw into the grille of a portable heater. Never leave the room where these appliances are turned on. Turn them off before you go, or, better yet, unplug them altogether to prevent vampire draw, or the power your equipment loads from the socket even when not in use.

3. Keep Devices Away From Water

Standing water can conduct electricity and electrocute your pet. As such, never leave electrical devices like smartphones, radios, or irons near the bathtub or sink. If you have an aquarium, have your electrician secure any wires or plugs to avoid mishaps caused by wandering paws. Where possible, run wires behind heavy, sturdy furniture to make it harder for your pet to access them.
