If you’re in the market for a new home, a functional fireplace and chimney can be a wonderful selling point. However, if the chimney has fire damage, the home improvement repairs necessary to fix it may be costly. It’s important to look for signs that there’s been a fire so that you can ask for the costs to be covered by the seller.

A Guide to Chimney Fire Damage

1. Puffy Creosote

Wood fires naturally produce creosote; this substance often lines the walls of chimney flues. If it appears to be puffy or in a honeycomb shape, there was likely a fire. In addition, these buildups are dangerous because they can easily catch fire. Also, they can block air flow in your chimney, increasing the chances of a fire.

2. Warped Metal or Damper Pipes

home improvementThe inside of each fireplace has a damper and other metal components designed to open and close the flue when needed. If a fire occurs in the chimney, these metal pieces will heat up and can show signs of damage. Dampers can vary by appearance, but the pieces should fit together seamlessly so that the flue closes fully. If you’re unfamiliar with this part of a fireplace or what it’s supposed to look like, have a home improvement professional perform an inspection.

3. Cracks in the Masonry

A severe fire inside the chimney can weaken the structure so much that it actually impacts the exterior masonry. If you notice any cracked bricks, inspect the interior fully to look for additional signs of fire damage. You may also find discoloration on the bricks due to smoke damage or a bent or misshapen cap at the top of the chimney.
