While some cases of diabetes commonly appear at a young age, type 2 diabetes develops over time as you get older. There are many risk factors that can lead to this condition, some of which you can control to better your odds. These choices are also positive, health-conscious options in general, creating a win-win scenario. To protect your health and avoid the inconvenience and complications associated with diabetes, here's what many doctors recommend.

How to Minimize Your Diabetes Risk

1. Stick to a Healthy Diet

A diet rich in plant fiber and whole grains—while being low in processed sugars—helps control your blood sugar levels. Make sure to also get a variety of foods to provide your body with the full range of vitamins and nutrients you need.

2. Exercise

According to the American Diabetes Association, exercise also helps keep your blood sugar in range. Incorporate aerobic exercise or resistance training into your daily routine, if possible, or at least exercise a few times each week. If you have difficulty exercising, talk to your doctor about possible options.

3. Get the Right Amount of Sleep

doctorsLack of sleep increases your risk of a number of health conditions, including type 2 diabetes. At the same time, getting too much sleep is also bad for your health. Ideally, most people should aim for seven to eight hours a night. If you’re getting less sleep than this, your doctor may prescribe sleeping aids.

4. Drink Water

Water in your body carries nutrients to your cells and waste away from them while helping to regulate the levels of substances, including sugar, in your blood. Make sure your food and drink choices are keeping you hydrated, and choose water over sugary drinks such as soda and sweet tea, which spike your blood sugar.

5. Reduce Stress

When you’re stressed, your body prepares for action by releasing certain hormones and increasing your blood sugar levels. This aggravates diabetes and increases your risk. Make time during your schedule to relax, and consider removing or reducing stressful activities.
