Common in parts of the Midwest, heat pumps are one of the most popular methods of heating and cooling a home. Compared to other systems, they don’t require much maintenance, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t susceptible to damage. This is especially true during winter, which is when they’re used more frequently. If you notice any of the following, be prepared to call a heating contractor for inspections or repairs.

Common Winter Heat Pump Problems

1. Insufficient Heat

Not enough heat cycling through the house? First, consider if there are possible gaps around your windows and doors. Replace the weatherproofing or caulk the frames if necessary. If these are fine, then it's possible your system is running low on refrigerant, the valves are broken, or the ductwork is leaking air. Have a heating contractor confirm the cause.

2. Cold Air

3. Short Cycling

When it's constantly turning on and off, there could be a dirty air filter or drafts. Always replace the filters according to your heating contractor’s recommendations and tend to cracked weatherproofing or frames ASAP. There may also be a problem with the thermostat’s circuitry; unfortunately, unlike the other two, this will require professional intervention.

4. Frozen Outdoor Unit

Because they’re built to handle the bitter cold, exterior heat pump units have a defrost cycle that should melt off ice and snow. If it’s not defrosting in the usual amount of time, have it serviced by a heating contractor.

5. Rattling

When you hear something rattling around, it’s most likely a loose component. Check the control panel, vents, and registers to see if there are any screws that can be tightened. If these are properly fastened but you still hear something, have a professional fully inspect your system and ductwork.
