Concrete surfaces are optimal for their strength and longevity, which makes them ideal for pathways, driveways, and other areas with heavy traffic. However, when the material has just been poured, it’s soft, wet and easily impressionable. To ensure your concrete mix project steers clear of playing children and wandering animals, consider the following information.

How to Keep Kids & Pets Off Wet Cement

concrete mixBefore you pour the concrete, pound metal T-posts around the perimeter of the work area with a sledgehammer, placing them every five or six feet. Next, pour the concrete mix and smooth it with a magnesium float. Line the outside of the posts with chicken wire, making sure not to leave any gaps. Then, attach the netted wire to the stakes with zip ties. While it might not be the sturdiest construction, it only needs to last for 24 to 48 hours until the concrete dries.

How to Repair Stepped-On Cement

If children, pets, or wild animals make it onto your wet concrete mix, you can repair the damage if you move quickly. In preparation for this possibility, purchase some extra mix and leave it off to the side. As soon as you notice an impression or hole, place the leftover concrete inside it, and use a trowel to smooth it out. Use a pushing and pulling motion to ensure the mix is spread evenly throughout the paw, hoof, or foot print.

If you don’t have any extra concrete, just work with what’s already there, using the trowel to push surrounding mix into the hole. If the concrete is already hardening, keep in mind that your patch job will be noticeable—in this case, you may just want to leave the footprint. You can also pour a fresh batch of concrete once the existing layer dries.
