When you have a fireplace, ash inevitably builds up after burning logs of seasoned firewood. There are benefits to removing ash, but knowing when and how to do so is critical for you and your home’s safety. Below is a guide to get started.

How to Handle Firewood Ash

Best Practices

You do not have to remove ash every time you use the fireplace. In fact, it’s advisable to keep an inch of ash on the firebox floor when your fireplace is in heavy use. This keeps your fire going, increasing the heat and warming the living space when you need it most.

When the ash layer is thicker than an inch, however, it’s best to remove some so that the fire does not wear down too quickly and the fuel source is not interrupted by thick, dead ash. Be cautious of live coals still hiding in this layer — they can still give off carbon monoxide and can ignite a fire if you dump them with the ashes. Rake the coals toward the air inlet and place new seasoned firewood behind them once the ash is removed.

If you are no longer planning to use your fireplace, remove all the ashes. This will stop them from absorbing moisture that can rust critical metal components. The ash and moisture mixture can also deteriorate stone elements.

Using your shovel, scoop up the unneeded ashes and place them in a bag for the trash or in an ash dump if your fireplace has one. Be cautious that no live coals go in this area with them. If the ashes were recently made, do not add them to your regular garbage for several hours until you’re sure there are no active coals within them. Vacuum up any spills on your flooring, and clean off remaining ashes on the hearth.

Why Remove Ash?

A thin layer of ash accumulation makes it easier to light your seasoned firewood since there is no obstruction to the fuel source but enough of the substance to maintain a good light.

Clearing away ash to only an inch will protect the firebox floor and will keep unused fuel out of the flue. With the ash assisting the burn, there is less fuel lingering and clinging to the interior of your fireplace.
