Spare keys come in handy when you misplace the original or lock yourself out. They will save you a call to a locksmith to get back inside your home. As convenient as spare keys can be, however, there are a few do’s and don’ts for finding the right hiding places for them and keeping your property safe.

Do:

Place spare keys in outdoor accessories.

Look for compartments or crevices in outside elements, like an air conditioner, grill, or child’s swingset. Make sure the key is tucked inside or underneath bars, rails, or cabinets and not easy to see. Add a magnet to keep the key securely in place.

Use your dog.

Man’s best friend can be a useful backup for your keys. Attach a spare to their collar or tag. This is helpful when you lock yourself out during a walk or while in your yard. Having your dog guard your keys is also not an ideal situation for a burglar trying to get inside your house.

Don’t:

Use a fake rock or planter.

If you want to try the rock idea, use a real one, as this will be harder to spot. Also, avoid planters; they are usually the first place most thieves will check.

Forget your neighbors.

Another way to reduce calls to the locksmith for lockout services is to have a trusted neighbor hold your spare. This eliminates the need to hide keys around your property that might be found by unwanted guests.
