If you’re having trouble keeping your home cool or warm, it could be time to contact an HVAC contractor for a new heating and cooling system. Although there are several different options to choose from, mini split systems and forced air systems are two of the most common. Knowing their differences will help you make the choice that’s right for your home.

The Differences Between Forced Air & Mini-Split Systems

Forced Air Systems

Forced air systems – also commonly referred to as central heating and air conditioning – are the most traditional form of climate control an HVAC contractor deals with. In these setups, a series of ducts and vents are used to blow warm or cool air throughout a home. To receive this air, the ductwork is connected to a furnace of some sort and the air conditioning unit.

Forced air systems require very little maintenance once they’re installed and can heat and cool an entire home with comfortable, dehumidified air. The air blown throughout the home can easily be upgraded with higher-grade filters to increase indoor air quality. These systems are compatible with many smart thermostats on the market, allowing for easy programmability of the heating and cooling schedules. Installing the necessary ductwork for the system, however, is an added cost that needs to be included in the budget.

Mini-Split Systems

These systems are made up of two components – an outdoor air condenser and air handlers. The condenser heats or cools the air to the desired temperature and moves it directly to the handler, which then distributes it in a room.

These systems do not require an extensive network of ducts and vents to be installed by an HVAC contractor in a home. Each air handler, however, only can cool and warm a single space. Multiple handlers can be connected to a single condenser (depending on the unit) but multiple condensers might be needed if a home has to be outfitted with many handlers.

Mini-split systems are cost-effective heating and cooling solutions. The ability to only heat or cool specific rooms in the home (thanks to the individual handlers) cuts back on some of the energy usage of the more widespread forced air systems. There does, however, need to be ample room for the handlers to work properly. This potentially introduces some design and aesthetic concerns.
