Myomectomy and hysterectomy surgeries are two processes used to remove uterine fibroids. These growths develop within the uterus and can cause symptoms such as heavy menstruation and discomfort. While both types of treatments can eliminate these symptoms, there are a few factors to consider when determining which option is best for you. Here is what to expect from each.

A Guide to Myomectomy & Hysterectomy Uterine Fibroid Removal

Myomectomy

uterine fibroidsA myomectomy is often recommended for women who wish to have children in the future. In addition to causing discomfort, uterine fibroids may also interfere with a woman’s ability to conceive. The procedure can be performed in various ways, depending on the patient’s condition. In an open procedure, an incision is made in the abdomen through which the fibroids are removed. With laparoscopy, a camera and removal device are inserted through a tiny incision, and with hysteroscopy, fibroids can be removed through the vagina and cervix.

In most cases, at least one overnight hospital stay is required. Your doctor will prescribe medication to alleviate any discomfort during your recovery, and provide instructions on limiting physical activity and avoiding intercourse. Full recovery may take two to six weeks, depending on the type of procedure performed. Because the uterus is still intact, women can begin trying to conceive upon approval from their doctor.

Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus and is recommended for women who do not wish to become pregnant in the future. It eliminates the odds of fibroids redeveloping, and can also be used as a treatment for endometriosis and other medical issues with the female reproductive system. Like the myomectomy, a hysterectomy can be performed as an open surgery, through the vagina or laparoscopy.

The process requires a hospital stay of 2-3 days for supervised recovery. Again, medications can be used to minimize discomfort, and vaginal penetration should be avoided for 6 weeks. Many patients who have this procedure find relief in the knowledge that fibroids will not be able to return after removal of the uterus.
