A centipede is a common insect to see scuttling across your yard, and they can seem harmless compared to bees and wasps. However, some pose a serious health risk, and it’s important to recognize the difference between those that are safe and those that aren’t. You’ll also need to clear them from your home and take preventative steps, such as hiring organic pest control, to handle the job. Here’s what you need to know about centipedes and how to manage an infestation.

Your Guide to Centipedes

Scutigera Coleoptrata

Known as the “house centipede,” this insect can be found throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. It thrives in temperate climates and seeks comfortable, shady places to nest in homes, specifically dark, humid areas like the bathroom. These critters are brown or black, and their body is composed of 15 segments. They range between one to six centimeters long and are one of the faster species of centipede. These insects can bite, though their fangs aren’t usually strong enough to break skin. If they do, though, the bite can be painful, but not an emergency.

Scolopendra Subspinipes

organic pest controlKnown as the Vietnamese Centipede, Chinese Red-Headed Centipede, or Asian Forest Centipede, this invasive species can be dangerous. It’s one of the largest centipedes and grows over 20 centimeters long, and it has a brown-reddish head and dark green, 21-segmented body. This species also has a large antenna and a jaw below the head that’s connected to a venom gland. They’re mostly nocturnal and hide in dark, damp places, and they’ll crawl into homes if their environment is disturbed.

The Scolopendra Subspinipes is non-aggressive, though are extremely dangerous. When they bite, they release a neurotoxin that disrupts the respiratory, cardiovascular, muscular, and nervous systems. The bite is extremely painful and can result in erythema, induration, and necrosis. If you see these in your home, it’s extremely important to avoid contact and call organic pest control services.

Centipede Control

Since centipedes eat other insects, their presence might indicate that there are other troublesome bugs in your home. They can be easily managed with organic pest control services, either through fumigation or spot treatment. It’s important to properly seal your home so they don’t return and also to eliminate dark, damp areas on your property where they may nest.
