The engine in your vehicle runs at high temperatures because of its internal combustion processes. It relies on a cooling system to maintain the right temperature by absorbing and removing excess heat. When a part of the system fails, it will inevitably lead to overheating and engine failure, requiring service at an auto repair shop. Here’s a closer look at what causes an engine to overheat.

Common Reasons for Overheating

Loss of coolant happens when there are leaks or gaps in the radiator and hoses, reducing the amount needed to circulate and absorb heat. Dirt, sediment, and debris that block radiators can also cause poor airflow for the coolant, making it unable to absorb and dissipate heat in the engine.

A failing electric cooling fan, stuck thermostat that won’t open, loose radiator cap, and defective water pump in the cooling system can all lead to overheating when they are unable to curb rising temperatures in the engine. Other reasons for overheating include defective cylinder head gaskets, blockages in the exhaust system, low oil levels in the engine, dragging brakes, and hauling weights heavier than rated capacities.

How to Prevent Overheating

A technician will check coolant levels, and if these are lower than usual, they will look for signs of leaks in the system. Bear in mind that coolant breaks down over time and needs to be replaced or flushed out periodically as well.

Apart from inspecting the cooling system, most auto repair shops will change the oil. Oil works to cool the engine by reducing the friction of internal parts with sufficient lubrication and absorbing heat during combustion.

When your engine is exhibiting signs of overheating, stop your vehicle and turn off the ignition immediately. Excess heat can warp or seize the metal components, causing further damage to your engine.
