You count on your car for safe and reliable transportation, but over time, parts may become worn down or damaged. You’ll often be able to tell there’s a problem with a particular component when your vehicle makes a certain sound. Don’t delay – if you hear these five noises, schedule auto maintenance as soon as possible.

Top Auditory Signs Your Car Needs a Tune Up

1. Squealing

Brakes may occasionally squeak, but if you hear high-pitched shrieking every time you press the pedal, it usually means your brake pads have almost worn out. They’re designed to make this noise to give you enough warning to get to an auto repair shop for a replacement. If you don’t address the issue promptly, you may eventually hear a grinding sound once the pad is stripped to its steel backing and makes contact with the rotor.

2. Rattling

A rattling sound under the hood or beneath the car can mean a component of the car is loose, there's a problem with the exhaust system or water pump, or debris has gotten caught in the undercarriage. Look under the car for anything hanging or sticking out; if you can't find it, ask your mechanic about the source of the noise.

3. Roaring

4. Clunking

A clunk or a knock when going over bumps can come from a bad suspension joint or other issue with the suspension. If it happens while turning, it could also be the power steering that needs auto maintenance.

5. Hissing

Hissing usually means that air is passing through somewhere it shouldn't, usually a damaged hose or seal, or that coolant is escaping. This sound may be more subtle than others on this list, but it’s still essential that you address the matter promptly.
