Advancing technology has made contact lenses more versatile, comfortable, and convenient than ever, especially for those who wear them for an extended time. Even with long-wear contacts, however, sleeping in your lenses overnight may not be safe. Here’s what you need to know about when to remove your contacts to protect your eyes.

Why Should I Remove My Contacts Before Bed?

Contact lenses have been approved for overnight wear by the Food and Drug Administration since 1981. Some lenses are even approved for up to two weeks without removal, but this kind of extended wear can increase your risk of infection. Long-wear lenses are gas permeable, allowing oxygen to get to your eyes but not enough to be safe overnight.

Microbes that cause infection flourish in a damp environment like the eyes, and when you’re asleep with your eyes closed, bacteria can grow without being washed away by blinking or tears. Eye infections can cause long-term damage like corneal abrasions, dry eye, and even vision loss.

How Long Can I Safely Wear Contact Lenses?

contact lensesSome contact lenses are meant to be worn and discarded daily, while others are meant to be worn for a month. You should follow the indications on your contact lens package and the instructions provided by your optometrist. Remove them every night before bed and place them in an approved contact lens container. Do not reuse contact solution, and clean your lenses before putting them in.

If you fall asleep while wearing your contact lenses, remove and clean them when you wake up or switch to a new pair if your lenses are daily disposables. Use eye drops to cleanse your eyes and promote tear production.
