Oral cancer screening is a routine part of a typical dental exam. Dentists check the condition of the mouth for abnormalities or growths that could signal cancer to ensure it is caught early. Below, you will find further information on how a dentist performs the screening, some signs and symptoms to look out for on your own, and what to do if you detect anything unusual in the mouth.

The Screening

During an oral cancer screening, the dentist is looking for any sores or red or white patches inside the mouth. Any of these can be red flags that abnormal cell growth is present, which means the possibility of oral cancer. In addition to looking in the mouth, the dentist will also use their gloved fingers to gently probe the inside of the cheeks, roof, and floor of the mouth; the tongue; and the outside of the throat and neck. They are checking for lumps or other growths that may not be visible. The screening is painless and typically takes no more than a few minutes.

Warning Signs of Oral Cancer

dentistBumps, lumps, or rough areas anywhere in the mouth, including on the tongue and inside the cheeks, could be a sign of unusual cell growth. A visible spot or spots in the mouth that are white, red, or a combination of both colors could also potentially be cancerous. These are among the more common warnings, but there are others to be mindful of as well, including unexplained bleeding in the mouth, soreness, the sensation of something caught in the throat, or pain or sensitivity anywhere in the mouth, face, or neck.

What to Do

Remember that these signs could be caused by various factors; cancer is just one possibility. Nonetheless, you should always be checked out by a dentist when any symptoms are present. Don't wait until your next checkup, and don't wait until pain starts or worsens. Early detection helps effectively manage any oral health issue, especially cancer.
