3 Golf Tips to Play From the Rough, Manhattan, New York

The stretch of ground between the fairway and the boundary markers is known as the rough. Because the grasses of the rough are often longer and coarser than other areas of the course, it can be a challenge to remove a ball that has landed there. But with a little know-how and some finesse with your golf clubs, the following tips will help you get back on track.

3 Ways to Play From the Rough When Golfing

1. Choose the Right Golf Club

In golf, the term lie refers to the position of your ball after it has come to a stop. In the rough, a good lie is a ball that essentially sits atop the grass; lower-profile hybrid golf clubs and most types of irons are typically best-suited to a good lie. In contrast, a bad lie is when a ball is submerged in the grass of the rough. In that case, more forceful contact with the ball will be necessary, so choose a higher-lofted iron.

It can be tempting to want to get out of the rough as soon as possible to continue your game. But taking it slowly and mindfully is the key to hitting cleanly out of the rough. Take the time to do some practice swings before going in for the ball. This will allow you to get a feel for the texture and density of the grass, where the ground starts, and how much force you will have to use.

3. Practice Good Grip & Stance

After choosing the club, ensure you have a firm grip that’s slightly lower than normal. You'll have more control over the club, which can make a world of difference when playing from the rough. Also, modify your stance. You want the ball closer to your back leg. This will reduce the volume of grass that accumulates between the face of the club and the ball during the swing, making for a more powerful launch.
