Whether it's due to a change in temperature or accidentally leaving your lights on, a dead battery is a common problem to deal with. Before contacting an auto mechanic, try jump-starting your vehicle. If you’re not quite sure how this process works, here is a quick overview.

3 Steps for Jump-Starting a Car

1. Gather Your Jumper Cables

It’s a good idea to purchase a set of jumper cables to keep in your vehicle in case of emergencies. If you don’t have them, ask other people in the parking lot or vicinity for help. You will also need another running vehicle to help you jump-start your battery.

2. Attach the Clips

Connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive terminal on your stalled battery and connect the other end to the positive terminal on the functional battery. Connect one end of the black cable to the negative terminal on the functioning battery and the other end to a clean, unpainted metal surface under the hood of the stalled vehicle.

3. Start the Vehicle

Start the working vehicle and allow it to run idle for a few minutes, so the dead battery can recharge. Try to start your car; if it doesn’t turn on after five to ten minutes, it may be time to replace your battery. If it does start, take off the cables in reverse order and keep your car running for about 30 minutes to give it time to charge fully.

If you've gone through these steps and your car still won't start, it might be time to see an auto mechanic for battery replacement.
