Whether you’ve inherited vintage glassware or received a set as a wedding gift, these items are among the most fragile in your home. Proper handling is necessary to ensure they remain in pristine condition. Here are a few tips to help care for your glassware and prevent breakage.

3 Glassware Care Tips

1. Hand-Wash Glasses

Avoid placing wine glasses in the dishwasher; the lack of support may shatter the glass. Instead, wash each glass by hand using warm to hot soapy water, but ensure it isn’t scalding. Boiling water could crack or break the glass. Place the glasses upside down on a dish towel to dry.

2. Don’t Stack Glasses Without Protection

glasswareStacking glass cups, plates, or bowls is an easy way to chip or scratch their surfaces. To protect your glassware, place a coffee filter in between each dish, which will prevent friction. Store wine glasses with the rim side up to put less weight on the bowl of the glass.

3. Don’t Hold Stemware by Bowl or Foot

When carrying stemware, don’t grip the bowl or foot since this can put too much pressure on the most sensitive part of the glass. Hold the stem between your thumb and first two fingers to provide enough stability.
