Whether you’re washing the dishes in the evening or showering before work, dealing with low water pressure is always a nuisance. Thankfully, if you have a water well system, there are some steps you can take to identify and address the problem. The guide below describes four common ways to restore proper pressure levels.

Do You Have Low Pressure From Your Water Well?

1. Adjust the Pressure Tank

You may be able to enjoy a stronger flow from your faucets by simply adjusting the settings on your pressure tank and pressure switch. Water pumped from your well flows through the pressure tank and is controlled by a pressure switch which is usually set to cycle between 40 and 60 pounds per square inch (psi).  A qualified technician may be able change the air pressure on the tank and adjust the setting on the switch to increase the pressure on the system. Some systems may not be able to handle increased pressure due to things like pump size, pump setting, water level and tank size.

2. Address Clogs

Blockages are also potential culprits behind low water pressure in well water systems. One of the number one causes of low pressure is a clogged filter or water treatment. You'd be surprised how many people don't even know they have a filter that needs to be changed periodically. If you have one and are experiencing low water pressure, its always a good idea to replace the cartridge before calling for service. If you are unable to replace it yourself, your well professional will be able to do it for you. Most reputable companies will go over your system while they are there to make sure your system is working properly and will include that in the service call. Clogged aerators on faucets and shutoff valves that are not open all the way are other causes of low pressure.

3. Mechanical

Other problems include worn pumps, defective drop pipe in the well, defective pipe in the ground or issues with the well itself.

4. Install a Constant Pressure System

To remedy this, you may be able to have a water well technician convert your standard system to a constant pressure system. This will regulate the pressure and adjust to maintain a constant pressure no matter how many plumbing fixtures are being used at once. This will also be based on a properly sized pump and plumbing that isn’t restrictive.
