During the coldest months, you may start to notice chilly spots in your home. Your windows are often one of the biggest culprits, as they can be drafty for numerous reasons. Not only can this cause discomfort but also waste a lot of energy. The guide below explains a few common causes of this issue, as well as tips for preventing it.

What Causes Window Drafts?

If your windows are double- or triple-pane, the gaps between the layers are likely filled with an inert gas meant to increase insulation. If the glass gets cracked, the gas may leak out, decreasing energy-efficiency. Older homes may be outfitted with outdated single-pane windows, which allow more cold air to seep in naturally, and should be replaced.

Additionally, if the windows were installed poorly, there may be small gaps around the frame. While these areas may have been caulked in the past, this sealant can break down over time.

How to Fix It?

As you heat it with a blow dryer, it contracts and draws tight, creating an effect similar to a double-pane window. However, this is prone to spawning unattractive air bubbles.

Furthermore, these temporary solutions aren’t nearly as efficient as full replacements, which can reduce your monthly energy bills. Some manufacturers also include UV protection to protect your upholstery from fading due to sunlight.
