If you’re using birth control pills as your primary method of contraception, it’s important to take your dose exactly as directed each day. While seemingly innocent, certain mistakes could put you at a greater risk of unwanted pregnancy. Whether you’ve been on the pill for years or have just recently started taking them, here are some important mistakes to avoid.

5 Common Birth Control Oversights

1. Taking It at Different Times

Progestin-only pills should be taken within a three-hour window every day. If you forget and don’t take your pill until much later, you may be at risk of unwanted pregnancy or breakthrough bleeding. If you find yourself struggling to take pills at the same time every day, you may want to discuss alternate options, such as an IUD, with your doctor.

2. Storing Pills Improperly

Like many types of medications, birth control pills should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. But it’s also helpful to keep pills where you’ll see them and remember to take them each day. Try storing them near your toothbrush or in your purse. You should also set an alarm on your phone or watch as a reminder.

3. Taking Drugs That Interfere

4. Neglecting the Placebo Pills

Skipping directly to your next packet when you’ve reached the placebo pills is usually considered safe; however, keep in mind that certain brands are better suited to this practice than others. With some pills, you may face a greater risk of breakthrough bleeding. Discuss this decision with your doctor if you find yourself skipping placebos regularly.

5. Missing Pills Consistently

When you miss a combination pill, you can take it as soon as you remember and will likely be protected against pregnancy. If you miss two or more, however, use a backup method of protection. If you find yourself missing pills often, consider alternate birth control methods that may be better suited to your needs.
