Bed bugs are tiny, wingless insects that survive on the blood of humans, mammals, and birds. They tend to hide in tight, dark spaces, especially inside bedding, mattresses, and furniture. In addition to this, their nocturnal nature and speed can make them hard to spot. So, how do you know you have an infestation? Below are three common signs to look out for.

How to Identify a Bed Bug Problem

1. Visible Shells & Exoskeletons

While bed bugs may be crafty, they aren’t clever enough to clean up after themselves, often leaving a trail of shells and exoskeletons behind. Check in every nook and cranny of your mattress, as well as in any cracks in the walls or baseboards.

2. Fecal Stains

Bed bugs are not choosy about where they defecate, so look in all compact, dark spaces; because most mattresses are white, their droppings are often easier to spot inside a bed.

3. A Bite

If you notice red welts or several punctures all in a line, you may have been bitten by bed bugs. Sometimes, the injury may burn or itch. However, because these insects’ saliva contains a natural anesthetic that can numb the skin, other people won’t feel it at all. Always get an unknown insect bite checked out by a doctor, who may be able to confirm a bed bug is the culprit.
