February is National Cancer Prevention Month, making it the perfect time to spread awareness of the disease. Although it’s a growing problem in the U.S., the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) suggests that nearly one-third of the most common cancers can be prevented through lifestyle changes, including a healthy diet. Here are five oncologist-approved foods that can reduce your cancer risk. 

What Foods Can Reduce Your Risk of Cancer?

1. Broccoli

Broccoli, among its other health benefits, contains compounds known as isothiocyanates. These compounds have antibacterial properties, which help combat cancer at the genetic level. Some of the cancers it specifically protects you from include breast cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer. Isothiocyanates are also found in cauliflower and kale.

2. Grains

Foods with whole grains, such as bread, contain hearty amounts of fiber. On top of lowering cholesterol and regulating digestive health, fiber can reduce your risk for several cancers, including esophageal cancer and colon cancer. Black beans and lentils are also good sources of fiber, as are seeds and nuts.

3. Seaweed

Seaweed that contains brown algae is high in fiber and fucoxanthin, a powerful antioxidant with anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. According to oncologists, fucoxanthin actively prevents and fights cancers by stimulating a function known as apoptosis. In this process, the body kills cells that have damaged DNA or are otherwise unhealthy, such as precancerous or cancerous cells. Fucoxanthin can slow or stop tumor growth and begin fighting cancer as soon as it forms.

4. Watermelon

oncologistWatermelon is rich in fiber and an antioxidant called lycopene. Lycopene has been shown to prevent cancer from developing by stimulating healthy DNA and removing contaminants from the body that cause cancer. It also catalyzes apoptosis and can boost your immune system.

5. Spinach & Kale

Leafy greens like spinach and kale have high levels of lutein in them, another strong antioxidant. While more research is needed, research shows that these greens can boost your immunity, promote healthy DNA, and prevent precancerous cells from developing. In one study, it was shown to greatly slow tumor growth and stimulate apoptosis in patients with breast cancer.
