If you have recently had beautiful new sod laid on your property, your yard is the picture-perfect backdrop for a party. However, new sod is delicate, and even an older lawn can be damaged by too much traffic. To protect your grass during an outdoor party, here are a few tips to consider.

How to Keep Your Sod in Good Shape During a Party

1. Put Barriers in the Way

Furniture, planters, and other objects can be arranged to direct your guests to certain areas. This is especially useful if you want to keep them away from a worn spot, a recently replanted area, or the edges of your turf.

2. Add a Walkway

SodWhen you have an uninterrupted stretch of grass, people will walk on it freely. If you have a sidewalk or stepping stones, however, most people will try to stay on them. Adding a few simple stones can protect the majority of your grass from heavy traffic flow.

3. Move Games & Toys

If you're using yard toys like a trampoline, kiddie pool, or slide, move them around periodically to different areas of the yard. This can help keep any one area from getting too flattened or muddy from repeated use.

4. Hold Off on Watering

Speaking of mud, your sod is much more likely to be damaged when it's wet because it's easier to move, dig, and squash. For about a day before your planned event, skip or reduce your daily watering to let the ground dry out a little, and then make up for it afterward.

5. Repair the Damage

After the party, take a walk around your yard and look for any areas which look torn or uneven. You may need to do a little digging in these areas to match the rest of your lawn grading before reseeding and adding fertilizer.
