If you recently hired a professional arborist to remove a diseased tree, they may have left the stump in place. There are two approaches to get rid of the stump: stump grinding and full stump removal. Each of these options has its benefits, as highlighted below.

Stump Removal

If you are planning to plant a new tree in the same space or perform other landscaping needs, you'll likely want to completely remove the stump and roots. While this technique is more time consuming and it will tear up the existing landscaping around the tree, it will also remove all major traces of roots and wood, leaving the ground clear for digging and building. This may also be the approach you need if the tree is an especially stubborn species which may put up additional shoots, or if the roots are interfering with pipes or foundations.

Stump Grinding

Stump GrindingFor an easier option, choose stump grinding. This process uses a wood chipper to mulch the stump where it stands, converting it to small pieces which will break down easily in time. The roots remain in place until they also decay naturally. This is the approach of choice if you have no major landscaping work planned, or if there is already a garden, lawn, or flowerbed which would be damaged in the process of stump removal. As an additional benefit, the roots and mulch will enrich the soil as they decay, making the area more fertile in the future.
