Having a theater right in your own home means you enjoy all of your favorite movies, TV shows, and sporting events with family and friends. As you design and set up the space, it’s important to avoid certain pitfalls that may delay the project or throw off your budget. Here are some common home theater mistakes and how to avoid them.

4 Common Home Theater Mistakes

1. Failure to Consider Windows

If the room in which you plan to set up your home theater has windows, position your screen strategically. If you place it directly across from windows, the glare will diminish the picture quality. Install room-darkening shades to ensure you see the screen clearly.

2. Wrong Screen Size

Ideally, you should view the screen from a distance of about two times its width. For example, you’ll see a 55-inch screen best when viewed from about six to eight feet away.

3. Incorrect Speakers

Most flat screens require separate sound systems for optimal audio quality. Choose speakers that fit the size of the room. Floor standing speakers, for instance, are better for large spaces, while bookshelf speakers fit nicely into compact areas. Don’t forget to include a central channel speaker and a subwoofer to achieve surround sound.

4. No Budget for Accessories

Even with the most careful planning, you’ll likely find the need for additional cables and wires. Set some money aside for an extra set of durable 18-gauge speaker wires and additional HDMI cables that are 18Gbps compliant.
