Every year, there are approximately 355,400 house fires in the United States alone. Given the very real danger of fire damage, every household should be aware of common flammable items around the home. While it’s no surprise that gasoline, turpentine, and rubbing alcohol are flammable, there are other unexpected household staples that are just as combustible. Here is a list of flammable items that might surprise you.

Unexpectedly Flammable Items You May Have in Your Home

1. Flour

Flour and similarly-textured goods like spices, nondairy creamer, and powdered milk can cause a fire. These kitchen staples are extremely dry and tend to linger in the air. When they catch a spark, they ignite quickly and can lead to substantial fire damage. Always store these items in airtight containers, and only use them in well-ventilated areas so they won't hang in the air and increase the risk of fire.

Oranges are 90 percent water, which might lead you to believe that there's nothing flammable about them. But orange peels contain a naturally occurring compound called d-limonene, which is unusually flammable. D-limonene can cause a flame to spread and lead to fire damage. Keep oranges in the vegetable crisper section of the refrigerator, and rinse and discard the peels after eating.

2. Hand Sanitizer

Hand sanitizer contains a significant amount of flammable alcohol. Any alcohol-based products can burst into flame at low temperatures, so use these products with extreme care and caution. Washing hands with soap and water is just as effective—and safer—than using hand sanitizer; however, if you use the latter, only apply a small amount and make sure it dries quickly. Store the product in its original bottle, securing the cap tightly after each use, and wipe down the outside of the bottle with a damp cloth to ensure nothing has spilled over.
