Your septic system has an important job. All of the waste from your household flows into the septic tank to be dealt with accordingly, such as solid waste sinking to the bottom to form sludge and wastewater flowing out of the tank into an adjoining drainfield. Maintaining this delicate system requires keeping foreign objects/liquids out of your drains and watching water usage to avoid problems with the tank’s natural bacteria balance and leaks, respectively. Learn which household appliances contribute to both issues without the right care.

4 Appliances That Can Cause Septic Tank Problems

1. Washing Machine

Avoid using your washing machine multiple times a day to keep your tank and drainfield functional. Even energy-efficient versions can overwhelm septic tanks and cause solids to leak out with wastewater if they are used too often. Use liquid rather than powder detergents, as powder versions contain clay fillers that clog septic systems.

2. Dishwasher

septic tankRun your dishwasher only when it is full to keep excess water out of your septic tank. Modern, energy-efficient models use less water compared to washing dishes by hand; however, there is no need to run a half-empty dishwasher numerous times a day. Limit use to once per day and avoid running other water-heavy appliances when the machine is on. Consider upgrading to a more efficient version, and use biodegradable detergent to keep tank bacteria balanced.

3. Toilet

Do not use your toilets for anything other than liquid waste, solid waste, and toilet paper. Flushing feminine products, cotton swabs, paper towels, chemical cleaners, and any other foreign object or liquid causes septic tank bacteria problems and clogs. Do not use your toilets to deal with extra water, such as water used to clean the bathroom, to keep the tank from getting too full too fast.

4. Garbage Disposal

Learn what you can and cannot put down your garbage disposal to prevent problems. Oil, fat, and grease clog the tank and drainfield assuming they do not solidify in your pipes to create slow drains and backups. Keep large pieces of food out of the disposal as well. Even though such foods get chopped up by the disposal blades, they do not break down in the tank and can eventually clog your drainfield.
