If you’re tired of dealing with surface stains, chips, and gaps, dental veneers may be the perfect cosmetic dentistry enhancement for you. The application is minimally invasive, and with proper care, you’ll get years of use from them. There are specifics to being a candidate, however. You’ll need to meet all these in order to get them, so keep the following in mind and speak with your dentist if you’re considering veneers.

Qualifications for Veneers

1. Healthy Teeth

Veneers need to fit comfortably on your teeth. If you’re dealing with any oral health issues, such as a larger chip that’s exposing the sensitive root chamber of the tooth, cavities, or gum disease, you’ll need to resolve these first. Cosmetic dentistry isn’t a solution for oral health issues. If you have healthy teeth and no upcoming procedures, it’s likely your dentist will approve you for veneers.

2. Misalignments Are Minor

dentistryIf your teeth are seriously misaligned, the veneers also won’t fit well on them. Veneers are intended to create an even, white smile and are designed to fit perfectly over each tooth. Alignment issues need to be resolved first with braces or other orthodontic care. Once your teeth are in a naturally straight position with no risk of shifting, your dentist can take a mold and apply dental veneers where suggested.

3. You Have Plenty of Enamel

When a dentist applies dental veneers, they’ll grind down some of the enamel on the outward-facing sides of your teeth. This ensures all the veneers sit flush with one another and your other teeth. To do this, you need to have a healthy layer of enamel. If it’s been worn down too much, the dentist can’t properly sculpt. You may need to refortify or explore other cosmetic dentistry options, so speak with your dentist.
