When it comes to your home or business’ wastewater treatment system, the septic tank typically gets most of the attention. However, this isn’t the only component that needs proper care and maintenance. Keeping your leach field in good condition is just as essential for safe removal of wastewater from your property.

3 Leach Field Maintenance Tips

1. Keep It Clear

Never park your car on top of a leach field since the excess weight could damage the underground pipes. Similarly, the leach field should be kept clear of trees and shrubbery—their roots could penetrate the drainage system. To avoid over-saturating the soil, direct the water runoff from your gutters away from the leach field.

2. Pump the Septic Tank

Without regular pumping, sludge and other waste could overflow from the tank and escape into the drainage pipes. This could result in the presence of standing water and foul odors on the leach field, presenting a potential health hazard.

3. Mind What You Flush

A wastewater treatment system is surprisingly delicate because of the bacteria living within the system that break down waste. Putting chemicals, paint, and other dangerous substances down the drain could kill these bacteria. As a result, the tank will quickly overflow, leaking sewage onto the leach field or back up into your home.
