February is National Pet Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of checking in on your animal’s teeth. Just like you, animals need an oral hygiene routine to maintain their overall health. Here is a breakdown of the basics of pet dentistry so you know how to care for your companion.

Why Does Dental Health Matter For Pets?

Poor dental health in pets involves more than just bad breath. Diseases in the teeth and gums can contribute to lung, kidney, and heart disease. Periodontal disease is especially common in dogs and cats. As their gums become inflamed, the infection can spread and even lead to tooth loss. If you notice your furry friend has swollen gums, foul breath, bleeding or missing teeth, or tooth discoloration, it’s time to see a veterinarian for dental care.

How Do Veterinarians Perform Pet Dentistry?

pet dentistryYou should bring your pet to their veterinarian for dental care at least once a year. When you first bring your pet in for dental care, the veterinarian will take X-rays and thoroughly inspect your animal’s mouth. They will look for signs of conditions like periodontal disease and tooth rot. The veterinarian will then place your pet under anesthesia to perform teeth cleaning. During this process, they will remove plaque from the teeth, polish the enamel, and apply a treatment like fluoride. If necessary, the veterinarian will extract teeth while your pet is under anesthesia.

How Can You Care for Your Pet’s Teeth at Home?

Take daily steps to support your pet’s health. Introduce teeth brushing to your pet when they are a puppy or kitten. If they are an adult, gently try to brush their teeth. Your vet may suggest flavored toothpastes and special treats to make the process easier. Although everyday care is recommended, many pets are not amenable, so try to brush your pet’s teeth at least three to four times a week.
