If you’ve been to the nail salon recently, you’ve probably heard of shellac nail polish. The latest innovation in manicure technology, shellac is a highly durable gel that stays on for significantly longer than traditional nail polish. The only caveat of shellac is it is also difficult to remove at home—which is why many people have a professional nail salon take it off for them. If you have to complete this task at home, though, refer to the following guide.

Supplies

You’ll need round cotton pads, a cuticle stick, tin foil, tape, scissors, a nail and cuticle conditioning balm, and a pure acetone nail polish remover—not acetone-based, as most nail polish removers are.

Steps for Removal

Cut a strip of tin foil about twice the length of your fingertip nailsalonand fold it in half horizontally with the less-shiny side facing out. Cut it into sections about 3-inches long. Repeat to make 10 of these, one for each finger.

Next, cut each cotton pad in half, so there are 10 semicircular pads. Fold each in half. Put nail polish remover on each pad and apply the pad to the fingernail. Ensure the pad is placed firmly and covers the entire nail. Secure the pads by wrapping the prepared three-inch foil strips tightly around each fingertip. Tape the foil to make it more secure.

Leave the pads in place for about 10 minutes after you’ve secured them. Then, remove them. Keep in mind acetone doesn’t dissolve the shellac but will loosen the polish, making it easier to remove.

Afterward, use a manicure or cuticle stick to remove the polish. Do not pick at it with your fingernails. Once the polish is gone, condition the nails with a cuticle balm.
