Maintaining your musical instrument  begins with proper care. By taking the time to understand how best to handle, clean, and store your instrument, you can ensure that it remains in good condition for as long as it’s in your possession. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Properly Care for Your Instrument

1.  Humidify in the Winter

Lack of/changes in humidity can crack your instrument causing expensive repairs.  It is easy to prevent with a case or room humidifier during the winter months.  Investing in a good hygrometer to measure the humidity levels is an inexpensive way to keep your investment in good condition year round!

2. Avoid Leaving It in the Car

Fluctuating temperatures inside your vehicle can damage your violin, viola, cello, or bass. If you plan to leave your car for more than a couple of minutes, leave the instrument indoors. Summer heat can melt the varnish on the surface, while cold winter conditions can lead to cracks.

3. Treat the Bow With Care

Also, don’t let the bow’s fragile tip make contact with solid surfaces, including floors and tabletops, as this could damage it.

4. Follow Proper Case Care

Imagine that you place your violin or cello in your case, only to forget to latch it shut; it could easily fall out and get damaged. Always double check that the case is securely closed before lifting it up. Also, always keep your instrument in your hands or in the case at all times.  Accidents occur when left on a chair or elsewhere!

5. Maintain the Key Components

Take the time to rid the strings and body of rosin residue by wiping down after you practice. Allowing rosin to remain on the strings and body can result in inferior tone when playing. Ask your instructor to inspect the bridge for straightness and to ensure that the fine tuners are properly adjusted.  Regular annual maintenance checks of your instrument and bow by your trusted shop is an excellent routine to follow.  They will be able to advise of any adjustments or repairs needed.
