Whether you have an oral piercing or are just thinking about one, it may be time to reconsider the look. While you may like the aesthetic, it’s not worth trading your health for it. The guide below explains just some of the reasons why dentists caution against them.

What Health Problems May Result From Oral Piercings?

1. Periodontal Risks

Oral piercings in the lips, cheeks, and tongue can rub against your gums as you talk and eat, irritating them. This results in inflammation and pain and could, inadvertently, cause the gums to pull away from your teeth, allowing bacteria and food particles to invade. All of this increases your risk of developing periodontal disease, which, when allowed to progress, will cause the loss of gum and bone tissue. Therefore, if your gums look swollen or inflamed, speak to a dentist immediately.

2. Enamel Erosion

dentistThe same piercings will also grind against your teeth, scratching, cracking, and eroding the enamel. When this protective layer is lost or weakened, it leaves your teeth vulnerable to tooth sensitivity and decay, since bacteria and extreme temperatures will have unrestricted access to the tooth’s dentin and, eventually, its pulp.

3. Broken Teeth

Your body jewelry is likely harder than your teeth, so it’s very likely that it will cause them to crack, chip, fracture, or otherwise become damaged if you accidentally bite down on them. If this happens, make sure you see a dental professional right away to prevent further complications.

4. Insufficient Cleaning

Lastly, your oral piercing could also interfere with the care you receive at the dentist. During even the simplest of appointments—such as a teeth cleaning—body jewelry in or around the mouth can get in their way, limiting their visibility and hindering their movements. Their care might not be as thorough, or you’ll be asked to remove and clean all of the piercings before each appointment, which is a hassle.
