Choosing an outfit to wear to a funeral or memorial service can be difficult as this is a ceremony that requires the utmost respect. While the family of the deceased will not usually specify a dress code, there are traditional guidelines that can help you determine what type of attire is appropriate for the somber mood and setting. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to consider when attending a memorial service.

Do:

Wear black or subdued colors.

Black is the traditional color for funeral attire. While you can wear other subdued colors, such as dark blue or grey, if you are feeling doubtful, stick with black to be safe. Never wear bright-colored clothing as this is disrespectful and can disrupt the setting.

Consider religious traditions.

Don’t:

Wear embellishments.

Avoid any garments or shoes that have embellishments, such as rhinestones or embroidery. Solid black or dark-colored closed footwear is the most appropriate option. While everyday jewelry, such as pearls or simple chain necklaces, are suitable, leave hoop and dangle earrings at home.

Dress casually.

People are expected to dress modestly at funerals, such as how you would for a job interview. For men, this may be a dress suit or a pair of dark slacks with a button-up shirt. Women should wear dark dresses, pantsuits, or blouses with skirts or dress pants. Avoid anything that reveals too much skin, such as plunging necklines or short dresses or skirts.
