When it comes to oral hygiene, dentists encourage their patients to rinse daily with a reliable mouthwash product. These solutions are designed to eliminate harmful bacteria that contribute to common oral health problems—such as gum disease and tooth decay. But while this at-home treatment offers many benefits, it is important to make sure you’re rinsing correctly. To help you optimize your teeth cleaning abilities, here are a few dos and don’ts to keep in mind when using mouthwash.

Do:

Choose products that kill bacteria.

To get oral health benefits from mouthwash, it’s important to choose one designed to kill bacteria—not just freshen up your breath. Products that contain alcohol, for example, are highly effective at eliminating oral bacteria. If you don’t want to use alcohol, ask your dentist about products that contain alternative antiseptic ingredients—such as cetylpyridinium chloride.

Mind the time.

While using mouthwash can tingle, it’s important not to spit it out prematurely. To ensure full coverage, it’s best to spend 30 seconds swishing the solutions around your mouth. If you have trouble, use a timer.

Measure correctly.

dentistIf you use too little mouthwash, you may not get the full antibacterial benefits you need. Unless directed otherwise by the manufacturer, stick to rinsing with about four tablespoons of mouthwash.

Don’t:

Ignore instructions.

Not all mouthwashes are the same. For this reason, it’s critical to always read through the instructions before using a new product. When reading through instructions, make sure to take note of whether you should dilute the solution and how much you should use.

Use excessively.

In general, it’s best to use mouthwash twice a day after brushing and flossing. If you use the product more frequently—such as to freshen up your breath throughout the day—you may develop dry mouth. In addition to being uncomfortable, dry mouth creates an environment in which harmful oral bacteria can thrive.

Skip other oral hygiene steps.

Although rinsing with mouthwash will leave you with a fresh and clean feeling, it is not a replacement for routine brushing and flossing. To reduce your risk of cavities and gum disease, always brush for two minutes twice a day, floss at least once daily, and visit your dentist for in-depth cleanings.
