Pests are a problematic addition in any restaurant kitchen: they can contaminate your food, and any sight of one is enough to send patrons running. All managers and owners should be proactive about their pest control. Taking some effective measures to drive those unwanted visitors away will keep your space secure and clean.

Pest Control Guide for Restaurants

1. Food Storage

Food is what draws pests into your restaurant. Store all of your dry food in tightly sealed containers, preferably metal or plastic. Store it on shelves six inches or more off the ground and a foot away from any walls. This makes it easy to clean the area and rotate stock as needed.

2. Trash

Use liners in all your trash cans and take it out regularly so that trash never overflows. All bins should have a lid on them that seals them shut. Lock any outdoor trash cans so pests such as raccoons or rats can’t get into them. Inspect your bins inside and out each time you replace the liner, so you can clean any spillages immediately.

3. Cleaning Supplies

4. Cleanliness

Cleaning up all spills immediately is key in both your kitchen and the main dining area. All tables and their seats should be wiped down with a sanitizing solution between every party. Sweep around the base of the table as well to catch any crumbs. Do the same regularly throughout the day with food prep areas.

5. Professional Pest Control

The single most effective way to protect yourself against all types of pests is to work with a professional service. Schedule an exterminator to treat your building regularly and conduct inspections. This will prevent most infestations, and if one does occur, they’ll find it before it impacts your patrons.
