Adoption assistance, also known as adoption subsidies, provides financial help and services for children and their adoptive parents.

There are a fair number of people that know if you adopt a foster child there are certain circumstances in which you can receive adoption assistance under Title IV (e) of the Social Security Act.  What most people don’t know is that under Title IV (e), private individuals may also qualify for adoption assistance that pays their adoption lawyer fees.

There are three circumstances in which a private individual, not adopting through DFCS, can qualify for adoption assistance.

  1. If you have had custody of the child for two years or longer
  2. If you are adopting a sibling group
  3. If you are adopting a special needs child (typically referring to a medical condition)

If you fit into one or more of these categories, the federal government, through the state, will pay your attorney fees for your adoption.
