Whether you wear eyeglasses all the time or only when reading or driving, keeping them clean is an important aspect of eyewear care. This will help you see better as well as prevent scratches and prolong lens life. While sometimes it seems like glasses are magnets for dust, oil, and fingerprint smudges, cleaning them doesn’t have to be so high-maintenance. Here are four tips to try out.

4 Ways to Clean Eyeglasses

1. Use Cleaner & Cloths

Eyeglass cleaner solution is formulated without harsh chemicals and will not scratch the lenses or deteriorate the coating. Spray some solution onto a microfiber cleaning cloth and gently wipe the glasses to remove dust and fingerprints. Wash the fabric periodically, but avoid fabric softener or other moisturizing cleansers, as these will cause the material to smear the lenses.

2. Store Safely

Keep your frames in a hard-shell storage case whenever you’re not using them. Not only will this prevent them from getting broken or bent, but will also help keep them clean. Use both hands when you remove your glasses to prevent them from slipping. Take your case with you or keep an extra at the office in case you need to store your glasses away from home.

3. Rinse With Water

eyeglassesIf you don’t have a specialized cleaner, rinse your eyeglasses with lukewarm water to remove dust and dirt that can scratch the lenses. You can use a mild mixture of water and dish soap, but be sure not to use cleansers with harsh ingredients. Generally, plain Dawn dish soap is fine. Don’t use hot water, either, as this may melt the coating on some lenses.

4. Dry Carefully

How you dry your lenses is just as important as how you wash them. Shake them gently after washing before wiping them. Avoid using paper products, as these can scratch the lenses and leave debris. Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth instead. Keep a microfiber cloth on hand at all times in case you need to wipe your glasses while on the go.
