Taking driving lessons will teach you to become familiar with operating a vehicle correctly in numerous locations. However, time is often limited when practicing in larger cities, so it is natural to feel anxious when driving on your own in these areas the first few times. Just remember your instructions and be mindful of the following tips to get around safely.

How Do I Drive Safely in a City?

1. Drive Defensively

An important point to remember from your driving lessons when in a metropolitan area is defensive driving. You will be surrounded by other cars and encounter cyclists and pedestrians frequently. There’s no way to determine how cautious these other individuals on the road will be, so it is up to you to anticipate all dangerous situations and remain alert of others not following traffic laws.

2. Avoid Peak Times

Whenever possible, new drivers should steer clear of city roadways during known rush-hour traffic times to lower your chances of getting in an crash. In many areas, this is from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

3. Avoid driving in “blind spots”

driving lessonsIn congested roads, be aware of sudden lane changes by other drivers. It is common for drivers to suddenly note their turn, or lane change quickly to pick up a friend or fare at the curb. Put space between your vehicle and others, not just in front or behind, but on the sides also.

4. Don’t Immediately Drive on Green

In bustling cities, pedestrians often cross streets when they don’t have the proper signal. Though your driving lessons may have taught you that you have the right of way, don’t immediately take off when a red light turns green. Check both ways for stragglers, and never try to drive around anyone walking slowly or jaywalking.

5. Take a Smaller Vehicle

The size of your vehicle can really impact how easy it is to get around a large and crowded city. Smaller cars have a much simpler time maneuvering and parking. If you own a large SUV or truck, see about borrowing a more compact vehicle the next time you need to make one of these trips.
