The American flag is a symbol that stands for respect, honor, and patriotism. As such, it should be treated with the deference and dignity it deserves when on display. To ensure you’re following the proper flag etiquette, here’s a helpful guide.

Guide to Displaying American Flags

The Proper Raising & Lowering Speed

When raising the flag, it should be hoisted quickly and flown at the top of the flagpole unless it’s specifically being flown at half-staff. As the flag is being raised, you should salute it as a sign of respect. When lowering the flag, you should do so slowly and salute it as it’s being lowered, holding the salute until the flag is removed or any music stops. If you’re displaying multiple flags, the American one should be raised first and lowered last.

Appropriate Time of Day to Display the Flag

American FlagsGenerally speaking, it’s customary to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on flagstaffs that are outdoors. However, if the flag is properly illuminated, it may also be displayed at night. The flag should be displayed on fair weather days, never during severe weather.  There are several materials available for light, medium, and heavy wind areas.

Flag-Related Traditions

The flag should be displayed on all days, especially on major holidays that include but are not limited to New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthdays, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. In regards to those who have served in the military, The Department of Veteran’s Affairs will provide burial flags to veterans who meet their qualifications of service.
