Wood fencing endures the elements of winter every day, including snow and ice, so winter weather can take its toll. But with a diligent maintenance program, homeowners can prevent seasonal damage. Here’s a guide to safeguarding your fencing this season.

3 Tips for Preserving Your Wood Fence During Winter

1. Clear Snow & Debris Away

When it’s already snowed, the first thing to check is if the drifts have accumulated against your fence. If they have, take the time to carefully shovel the piles a few feet away. Otherwise, there is an enduring wet wall pressed against your fencing that can lead to rot and weakened posts. Be careful not to scrape your shovel against the wood — otherwise, there will be unsightly scarring along the surface. As you do this, remove any twigs, leaves, or other debris that may show up between the posts. These objects can accumulate moisture and weaken your fencing.

2. Wipe Away Moisture

fencingOnce all the snow has been scooped away from your fencing, gently wipe away any moisture that remains on the surface. Definitely don’t use your shovel for this last task or you’ll end up with scrape marks. Instead, bring over a brush or broom so you can dry off the fence without risking damage.

3. Schedule Repairs

Since the snow is the greatest challenge your wood fencing will face, it’s valuable to schedule any repairs before the next storm comes. By replacing any chipped posts, anchoring the fence more securely into the ground, or inserting a new mooring, the structure will be able to handle the additional weight of future snowfall. Since the snow can make it more difficult to access the fence, it’s best to make the appointment before inclement weather hits.
