Teeth whitening can help you to enjoy a brighter, more beautiful smile, but how can you keep it that way? People often make simple mistakes after whitening their teeth that cause discoloration and discomfort, so it’s important to do what you can to prevent problems. Here are a few important do’s and don’ts for oral care after teeth whitening.

Do:

Use a Sensitivity Toothpaste

Teeth whitening is effective due to the lightening agents that permeate through the dental enamel to whiten the underlying dentin. During whitening, a chemical reaction releases plugs in the dental enamel, making it easier to lighten the tooth. This reaction can cause tooth sensitivity, so be sure to use a toothpaste containing potassium nitrate to temporarily plug the tubules and prevent discomfort.

Use a Straw

Consider keeping a few straws handy in your car, purse, or briefcase for instances when you might be faced with drinking a colored beverage after your whitening treatment.

Don’t:

Eat Colored Foods

Certain foods, such as tomato sauce, berries, coffee, red wine, and chocolate are packed with natural pigments that can stain your teeth. After whitening, avoid any natural or artificially pigmented food and opt for light colored ones for at least 24 hours.

Smoke

Cigarette smoke contains a variety of substances, like tar, that can discolor your teeth. If you haven’t already quit smoking, try to avoid this habit for as long as possible after your whitening treatment to preserve the results.
