Trying an entirely new cultural cuisine is exciting, but with so many options, choosing just one entree can be tricky. Far from being an exception, Persian food offers a variety of delectable flavors and tantalizing aromas. So where do you begin when ordering at a Persian restaurant? To help you make a decision, take a look at some of these popular Persian dishes.

5 Delicious Persian Food Staples

1. Kabob

Most diners are at least somewhat familiar with the succulent grilled meat of kabobs, skewered on a stick for ease of consumption. What you might not know is the diversity of kabobs available. Beef, chicken, vegetables, shrimp, lamb, and salmon can all be marinated and cooked to your preference.

2. Fesenjoon

Pomegranates are a longtime favorite in Iran, making them the obvious base for a Persian food staple. Fesenjoon is made from stewed pomegranate paste, ground walnuts, onions, meat, and a selection of spices. The stew blends the tartness of Iran’s national fruit with savory meats and spices for a truly unique dish.

3. Ghormeh Sabzi

Persian foodIf you’re a fan of greens, try the deep green, veggie-filled ghormeh sabzi. Loaded with finely chopped vegetables, red beans, beef or lamb, and many herbs, this stew is seasoned with dry limes for a satisfyingly sour taste. If there’s one thing you can expect from Persian food, it’s a deep love of sour flavors.

4. Zereshk Polo

Zereshk polo features vibrant red barberries, pistachios, and almonds mixed into saffron basmati rice. It is sometimes served with grilled chicken. In line with other Persian food favorites, the berries add a desirable tartness to the dish. Additionally, unlike most American meals, the chicken is the side item while zereshk polo remains the star of the show.

5. Kashk Bademjan

If you’re looking for lighter fare, kashk bademjan makes an excellent appetizer. This vegan spread consists of sautéed eggplant, caramelized onion, and kashk — yogurt whey. It pairs nicely with a light bread as a refreshing dip.
