Dry skin feels and looks rough, and it can also cause itchiness and irritation. Beyond leading to healthier skin, proper moisture levels are also integral to preserving a supple, youthful appearance. To combat dryness and control signs of aging, here are some practical skin care tips for banishing dryness.

5 Dry Skin Care Tips

1. Take Sensible Showers

Although it seems counterintuitive, water dries your skin out. In particular, long, hot showers are notorious for causing dry skin. Try to take showers lasting between five and 10 minutes, and keep the water temperature warm, not hot.

2. Moisturize Right After Washing

As soon as you’re finished bathing, pat your skin dry with a towel. Then apply a moisturizer right away to prevent skin from drying out as water evaporates. You should repeat this process after washing your face too.

3. Choose Gentle Products

That’s why you should select gentle, unscented moisturizing creams, soaps, and laundry detergents. Additionally, ointments and creams with ingredients like shea butter, olive oil, and jojoba oil tend to soothe and moisturize skin better than lotions.

4. Wear Protective Layers

Many daily activities can expose your skin to harsh elements, from running your hands under hot water while washing dishes to spending time in the sun. Prevent dryness by protecting your skin against these factors. Use rubber gloves while washing dishes, and wear light, breathable layers outside. Don’t forget to apply sunblock daily as well.

5. Shave & Scrub Carefully

Shaving and scrubbing can strip essential oils from the skin, leaving it dried out. Since dull blades can irritate the skin, use a sharp razor and switch it out frequently. People with sensitive skin should also avoid scrubbing rigorously and instead exfoliate gently with a wet washcloth.
