Cataracts are an eye condition in which the lens becomes cloudy, compromising vision and making objects appear unclear. Often, the condition is a result of the natural aging process, but left untreated, they can seriously impede visibility and even appear as a visible haze over the eyes. Luckily, there are a few early warning signs which can be acted upon sooner.

What Are the Early Signs of Cataracts?

1. Clouded Vision

Patients with cataracts often experience blurred or dim vision and find that objects often take on a cloudy appearance. You may also notice fuzzy spots developing in your field of vision, which worsen over time and make it difficult to concentrate on objects, reading materials, or the television.

2. Poor Night Vision

cataractsIf you find your night vision worsening, take note. Often, this condition dims the patient’s eyesight, causing nighttime activities such as driving to become more difficult. This symptom tends to manifest even earlier than others, as vision changes may only be minor during the day but become more pronounced at night.

3. Halos & Glare

In addition to dimness, you may also struggle with night vision due to halos and glares appearing around light sources. While this phenomenon may also occur during the day, people tend to notice it most at night. Because light passing through cataracts is diffracted, lights from oncoming cars, streetlights, and other sources can have this effect.

4. Sensitivity to Light

Sometimes, the discomfort caused by brighter light sources intensifies in the early development of cataracts. Frustratingly, this may also be accompanied by the need for more light to perform activities such as reading. If you find yourself becoming more sensitive to light or needing more of it to see, speak with your eye doctor.

5. Dullness

Over time, patients tend to notice a gradual fading of colors. Hues are no longer as vibrant as they once were, and in some cases, they take on a yellow shade. This symptom takes place because the eye’s lens is obstructed, and the lens that clouds over the eye alters colors and shades.
