Planning a kitchen remodel is exciting, as you get to design your dream space that will serve as the heart of your home. While thinking about the plumbing may not be as fun as choosing your new countertops, you can really add a lot to your kitchen’s function. Consider the following points for a successful renovation.

Kitchen Remodeling 101: Plumbing

1. Plan for Your Water Usage

Compare the layout of your planned kitchen to that of your existing plumbing. If your home is older, its existing system may not be designed to handle the needs of modern-day water-using appliances. With some expert help, you can determine what needs to be moved or added to the system.

2. Install Individual Shutoffs

plumbingIndividual water shutoffs for each appliance—or at least one for the kitchen as a whole—can save the day if you experience a leak or require repair. You’ll avoid water damage to your new kitchen by turning off the water supply so your plumber can handle your repairs. You won’t need to use the main shutoff for the entire house—being able to use the rest of your home normally is a huge advantage. It’s ideal if your sink, refrigerator, and dishwasher can all have their own shutoffs.

3. Consider Modernizing

This remodel is the opportune moment to modernize your plumbing if it’s due for an upgrade anytime soon. Much of the labor of replacement comes from accessing it, so look at its current condition and expected life span. Copper is expected to last more than 50 years, cast-iron up to 100 years, and steel up to 50 years. If your pipes are approaching the end of their expected life or their joints are falling apart, take advantage of this opportunity to handle that now.

It’s also a chance to upgrade fixtures, plan for a pot filler near the stove, or install a top-of-the-line garbage disposal. Your plumbing should function seamlessly with every aspect of your kitchen—including the ease of modern living.
