Whether you own a speed boat, pontoon boat, or trawler, getting it ready for spring and back in the water will require some effort, including cleaning and maintenance work. Preparation is key to ensuring that your watercraft works well during boating season. The list below offers helpful tips for taking your vessel out of storage.

A Guide to Preparing Your Boat for Spring

1. Wash Away Grime

Even if your speed boat or other vessel was properly stored during winter, wash it to get rid of spider webs, dust, and debris. If the boat was stored outside, remove the dirt and grime from the hull. During a thorough cleaning, you should rinse the boat with water and apply your preferred cleaning solution, followed by specialized buffing and waxing agents. Vacuum the interior and use a marine surface cleaner to wax your vessel.

2. Charge the Battery

Speed BoatIf you left the batteries in your boat all winter, check for corrosion. Improper storage can cause the battery terminals to corrode and produce a flaky white or blue substance. When batteries are left sitting it can shorten their life span unless they are fully charged at least once a month. Have the batteries tested and replaced—if necessary—to avoid mechanical problems such as a lack of power to the motor.

3. Check the Fuel System

While your pontoon or speed boat was sitting for several months, it may have deteriorated slightly. Check the fuel system and inspect the hoses and connections for leaks and other malfunctions that require boat repairs. Make sure all of the clamps and fittings are sealed properly, and replace any boat parts that are cracked or have signs of excessive wear.
