Candles provide a warm, homey glow and a relaxing, pleasant aroma. However, unless you take precautions when burning candles at home, you could find yourself filing a homeowners insurance claim. For safety's sake, follow the suggestions below when burning candles.

Candle Safety Tips to Avoid a Homeowners Insurance Claim

1. Never Burn Candles Near a Fan or Vent

The moving air from a duct vent or fan will cause the candle to burn more quickly than it should. Worse, it can blow loose or lightweight materials—such as a curtain or a sheet of paper—into the flame and start a house fire.

2. Always Keep Burning Candles in Sight

When you are burning a candle, never leave the room for more than a moment. Additionally, never leave the house while it's still ignited. Keep the flame in sight at all times, and make sure it is completely out before you leave the room or go to bed.

Even if the surface is fireproof, use a designated candle holder or heatproof coaster to prevent an accident. Even jar candles should be placed on a dish in case the table is bumped. Make sure the holder is non-combustible, large enough to catch any drips of wax, and stable, so the candle won't topple over.

4. Remove All Nearby Flammable Items

When burning a candle, move all papers, fabrics, and other flammable materials out of the area to prevent the fire from spreading in case the candle falls. Set the candle on a heat-resistant surface, and make sure it is level and stable.
