Whether you’re a new homeowner or have owned a home for years, plumbing issues will inevitably catch you by surprise. Problems with your toilet can be particularly tricky, because they often start small and grow. The guide below outlines some of the most common issues that arise with toilets. Spot them and you’ll know you need to call a plumber.

Issues That Could Affect Your Toilet

1. Constant Running

This issue can up your water bill significantly, so it’s wise to pinpoint the issue and have it fixed by a plumber. This problem is usually caused by a flapper that’s warped or stuck up. Open the tank and flush the toilet. The flapper is the large rubber piece that moves up, exposing a hole that leads to the toilet bowl. If the flapper doesn’t create a perfect seal with this hole, it will need to be replaced. If it’s just stuck up, try adjusting the flush chain until the flapper falls into place.

2. A Leaking Supply Line

plumberYou can find the supply line running from the floor or wall to one of the corners of the tank. This line pulls water from your main supply to fill the tank, but it can degrade over time and develop leaks. If the segments in the line wear out, they can create a slow leak that’s difficult to notice. Flush the toilet and put your hand on the supply line. If it feels damp, you have a problem that needs to be addressed.

3. A Weak Flush

This problem can be caused by several factors, such as mineral deposits in the flow channels, clogged feed holes under the lip of the toilet, or a slack flapper. To solve the first issue, drain the tank, open the flapper, and pour toilet bowl cleaner down the flush valve; then, let it sit overnight. The second problem can be resolved by using a coat hanger to clean the small holes that discharge water. If you aren’t comfortable doing this, a plumber will have equipment tailored to this job to complete it. The final issue may be solved by removing any slack in the flapper chain. If none of these fixes work, consult a plumber for a professional opinion.
